Where did Derrick come from?
As an ER nurse through the pandemic, our author Dishon cared for many young patients who were afraid of the unknown. This made him wonder about other ways that kids encounter the healthcare system, and how we can help them prepare for what they’ll experience. From this, Derrick’s character was born. In a series of short fantastical tales told with bright and inviting comic book imagery with thanks to our illustrator Patrick, young readers travel with Derrick on his adventures through health care.
Who is the author?
A New York native and veteran of the U.S. Navy, Dishon is now fortunate to call Hawai’i his home, where he’s worked as a registered nurse for over a decade in myriad settings. During the production of his second book, he completed his graduate studies in nursing and is currently establishing his practice as a nurse practitioner. On his off time, he enjoys surfing, coaching CrossFit for adults and kids, and spending time with his wife, friends, and family.
Who is the illustrator?
Patrick, a talented artist and illustrator based in Framingham, MA, creates vibrant and imaginative works that bring joy to the hearts of both young and old. Alongside his beloved dog Lucy and his equally gifted spouse, Samela, Patrick masterfully utilizes digital, oil, and acrylic mediums to weave captivating stories inspired by anime, the beauty of nature, and the cherished connections he shares with his friends. As a passionate gamer, he adeptly incorporates the whimsy and excitement of the gaming world into his art, breathing life into every page of his children's books. With several public sculptures gracing his city, Patrick continues to spread the simple pleasures of life through his heartfelt creations.
